11am-4pm Planting a Pollinator Garden. Be part of the experience! Work with volunteers as they revitalize a garden space at the farm into a pollinators' paradise. Malabar Farm State Park. 

 

4pm-5pm Welcome to Mohican Country. Start your fun-filled Mohican Wildlife Weekend with information and plans! By joining a Mohican State Park Naturalist, you will be armed with information about Mohican Country, Wildlife Weekend, event schedules, maps, directions and any questions you may have about wildlife and wildlife viewing opportunities. So bring your questions and comments or just stop by to visit and say Hi! Mohican State Park/Resort Lobby. 

 

 

5pm-6:30pm Welcome Reception. Meet our Wildlife Ambassadors. Be sure to sign up for our mailing list. Raffle held for many donated items. Mohican Outdoor School. 

 

7pm-8pm Keynote: Denise Ellsworth. The Power of Pollinators. Why pollinators matter, who they are, and how to protect them. One in every three bites of food we take can be tracked back to animal pollinators. Who are these vital creatures, what exactly do they do, and how are they threatened across the globe? Mohican Outdoor School.

8am-10am Guided Spring Nature Hike! Have you ever wondered what species of animals, insects, and vegetation can be found around Richland County in the spring? Come on a guided hike as we walk various trails great for viewing wildlife such as birds, butterflies, and spring ephemeral wildflowers. Gorman Nature Center

9am, 10:30am, 12pm, 1:30pm, 3pm Birding Boat Tours/Clearfork Reservoir. $10 per person. Limit nine per boat. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Ohio Bird Sanctuary. Ohio Bird Sanctuary

10am-11am A Bug's Life. Join us for a fun activity discovering how and why plants attract insects. Kids, bring your nature loving, creative, artistic selves! Mohican State Park/Resort Lobby.

 

 

 
10am-12pm Attracting Pollinators with Native Plants! Are you a fan of hummingbirds, butterflies, moths, bees and wasps? Do you like growing native wildflowers? Did you know that over 4,000 species of native pollinators call Ohio home? Learn how to evaluate and select native plants for your landscape to attract pollinators. Gorman Nature Center.   
 
10am Queen Bee Puppetry. Bring your children to see this professional puppet show. All children will have the opportunity to make a pollinator puppet.

10am Goldenrod Galls. Goldenrods are a wonderful species that attracts many different polllinators, from bees and butterflies, to beetles and wasps.
Lowe-Volk Nature Center.
10am-11am Gardening for Pollinators. Gardeners play a vital role in the development & conservation of habitat that benefits pollinators, including bees, birds, and butterflies. Learn practical steps to create and enhance habitat, plant selection, and simple design elements. Program presented by Denise Ellsworth, OSU. Pleasant Hill Lake Park. 
 

 

 

 

 

 

 

10am-11:30am Vernal Pool Study. You are welcome to come, observe, and explore a vernal pool with Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalists. We will share the functions and importance of a vernal pool and give you the opportunity to view the life of a vernal pool through observation and microscopes. Malabar Farm State Park
10am-12pm Kids Crafts. Create amazing works of art! Choose from a variety of FREE make-it-take-it projects including sun catchers, birdfeeders, and miniature gardens. Charles Mill Lake Park Messerly Recreation Center
10am-3pm Photographing Birds of Prey. A variety of bird of prey species will be displayed in natural settings along the trails. Perfect for up close photographs. Ohio Bird Sanctuary
10am-3pm Fly-fishing and Fly-tying Demonstration. Presented by Mohican Fly Fishing Club. Meet at the Covered Bridge river access. Mohican State Park
11am Forest Management. Learn about the forest that makes Mohican what it is and how you can apply it to your own backyard. Mohican Memorial State Forest

11am-12pm Pollinator Garden Planting. We will be planting a pollinator garden onsite using the garden design and plants approved for this site. Tools and plant materials provided. Pleasant Hill Lake Park. 
 

 

12pm How Does Pollination Work? Through a fun-filled - an tasty! - Cheetos activity, participants will understand how plants and animals make pollinator work. Afterwards, there will be a Pollinator Scavenger Hunt. Fun for all ages! Lowe-Volk Nature Center. 

 

 

12pm-2pm Nature's Movers and Shakers! We know the usual suspects like butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds but did you know that all kinds of animals are responsible for pollinating and spreading our very important local plants? Become a nature detective as we hunt for animals and talk about how they help our local plants! Best for children but all ages are welcome! Gorman Nature Center.

 

 

 

12pm Birds as Pollinators - Hummmm? Learn about how our smallest winged marvels play a large role in the ecosystem. See this winged jewel up close. Ohio Bird Sanctuary. 

12pm-1pm Bats are Pollinators Too. Birds, bees, and butterflies are not the only pollinators in the world. Those little creatures of the night, bats, are outstanding pollinators in large areas of the world. Our discussion will cover how, when, and where they go about this important task. Malabar Farm State Park.

 

 
 
12pm-5pm Nature Oriented Scavenger Hunt. Hike the steepest trail in the Mohican State Park on this 3/4 mile loop trail that follows the ridge above the mill. Relax with your family on the overlook deck and take in the beautiful views. Kids can gather scavenger hunt items along the way, and then turn in their items at the Welcome Center Cabin to earn a prize! After your hike, take advantage of a multitude of free kids nature crafts and activities. Wolf Creek Grist Mill
 
 

 

1pm-4pm Wildflower Hike. Native wildflowers are in bloom at Mohican. Some of the best flora and fauna can be found here. Come and join us on this hike while we discuss ways plants attract pollinators. This is a two mile, moderate to easy hike. Trail may be muddy. Hemlock Gorge Trail - meet at the Nature Center located in Campground Area A, south of Loudonville off State Route 3. Mohican State Park.

 

 

 

1pm Intro to Square Foot Gardening. This program intended for adults. Mohican Outdoor School.

1pm Pollinator Gardening for Kids. Children will learn about pollinators and make a starter garden. Mohican Outdoor School. 

 
 
 
 

 

1pm-2pm How Sweet it is. Basic introduction to local beekeeping. Look at bee hive selection, care of bees, honey production and harvest, opportunities to get involved and starting your own bee hive. Pleasant Hill Lake Park Welcome Center

 

1pm-3pm Building a Pollinator Garden. Naturalists will be actively working in the Sanctuary's butterfly garden. Interactive program. Come learn and assist. Children welcome. Ohio Bird Sanctuary. 

 

 

2pm Successes of a Pollination Station. The grounds of Lowe-Volk Park have two active sites dedicated to pollinators: the Butterfly Garden and Pollination Station. These small sites are host to many native plants that attract a wide variety of pollinators, from hummingbirds to Monarchs. This short hike will follow the trail of successes - and set-backs - of each site, giving homeowners a taste for what they can expect in establishing their own tiny pollinator oasis on their property. Lowe-Volk Nature Center. 

2pm Gourd birdhouse workshop. Make your own bird house from a gourd. These beautiful, natural houses can be stained or painted for avian use or a unique home decoration. $10/person material cost. Ohio Bird Sanctuary

2pm-3pm Earth Friendly Pest Management. Participants will explore common pest problems and ways to keep pests away naturally. Presented by Denise Ellsworth, OSU. Pleasant Hill Lake Park Welcome Center. 

 

 

2pm-4pm Hands-on Animals. Join us for our exciting finale to Saturday's Mohican Wildlife Weekend activities! Enjoy the experience of touching, holding, and learning about some of our resident reptiles and amphibians. All of our educational animals are native to the Richland County area. This program is enjoyed by all ages. Gorman Nature Center

 

  3pm Wildflower Hike. Mohican Outdoor School.   

 

 

3pm-4pm The animals that travel with Jack Hanna. The program that will give you the opportunity to get up close and personal to learn about Jack Hanna's animals. Discover where they come from, what they eat, and possibly touch the birds, reptiles, and a variety of mammals. Bring chairs or blankets for the lawn. Wolf Creek Grist Mill   
 

3pm-4pm Bee Craft. Paint and create a terracotta bee creature or a bee mobile to hang. All supplies and directions provided. Family-friendly and FREE. Pleasant Hill Lake Park Welcome Center.

 
  3pm-5pm Butterfly Puddle Workshop. Paint a terracotta clay saucer and learn how to attract butterflies to your garden with a butterfly puddle. Supplies are limited, so reservations are requested at 419-368-6885. Charles Mill Lake Park.   

 

 

 

5pm-6:30pm Wildflower Hike. Explore the forest floor in search of spring wildflowers. Meet at the Johnny Appleseed Amphitheater parking lot for a 1.5 mile walk around the grounds. Be prepared by wearing sturdy shoes and bring water. Charles Mill Lake Park

 

 

 

7pm Birds of Prey Show. Enjoy an up close experience with a variety of Ohio's bird species. A 30 minute presentation that is fun and educational. Brought to you by the Ohio Bird Sanctuary. Mohican State Park Resort Lobby 

 

  7pm-9pm Creatures and Canvas. Find your inner artist at this fun and inspiring painting class for all skill levels. Create a masterpiece featuring the natural beauty of the area, enjoy refreshments, and learn about Ohio's native wildlife. $10 per person, pre-registration required by callling 419-368-6885. 7pm-10pm Wildlife Barn Dance. Continuing a Bromfield tradition, square and line dancing with live music and caller. Beginners welcome! Food available. $1 donation at the door for ages 12 and older. Malabar Farm State Park

Want to know more about things like warblers, vireos, tanagers, swallows, rails, gulls and bitterns? Join us as we explore the avian diversity of the Mohican region, Ohio, and beyond. 11am-3pm Keeper Talks. Meet and greet many of our education raptors and learn from their caretakers about their natural history and reasons they reside at the Sanctuary. Great opportunity for up-close photography. Ohio Bird Sanctuary.

  12pm-2pm Butterfly Banquet! Different types of butterflies spend their winters in all different stages of life, but what happens when they come out of hibernation? Join us for a hike around the property as we search for and discuss these important pollinating insects and the food plants that keep them alive. All ages welcome! Gorman Nature Center.   
  12:30pm Hummingbird Hike. The first of the hummingbirds are returning to Ohio. Join us for a hike looking for this very important pollinator. Mohican State Park Covered Bridge Picnic Area.   
 

1pm Hemlock Falls Hike. Take a hike along the historic and scenic Hemlock Falls trail and learn about its unique natural history and folklore. This hike has sections of trail with rugged, rocky terrain, and may not be suitable for the very young or those with physical limitations. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Meet at Hemlock Falls Center porch. Mohican Outdoor School. 

1pm-2pm Mushroom Hike. Mingle through a magnificent world of mushrooms! Travel with a Malabar guide to learn about finding mushrooms, their purposes, which ones are edible and more! Pre-registration is preferred. Call 419-892-2784. Malabar Farm State Park. 

1pm-2pm Pollinators for All. Join a Division of Wildlife Biologist and learn how Pollinator Plots can positively affect not only insects and butterflies, but many wildlife species (ex. turkey, rabbits, songbirds, pheasants, deer, etc.) Wolf Creek Grist Mill 

1pm-3pm Buzz About Bees. Meet Beekeeper Doug and learn how bees collect pollen and make honey.  Discover which flowers attract bees in your yard! Charles Mill Lake Park. 

  

 

 

 

2pm-3pm Butterflies & Skippers with "Wild Ginger". Ohio is home to over 40 butterfly and skipper species, many of which are now on the endangered list. Join Malabar volunteer, "Wild Ginger", to learn about these fascinating creatures and how to create a habitat that attracts and supports them in your own backyard. Free, no registration required, but space is limited. Malabar Farm State Park. 


 

  2pm Your Backyard Refrigerator. Learn how your yard can be a feast for native pollinators and birds. Ohio Bird Sanctuary.
